Coursework

With a degree in Integrative Studies, the actual coursework and education I've recieved may be a bit unclear to some. In order to clear up some of this confusion, I've written a rationale regarding my concentration choices:

The concentration areas of psychology and sociology were originally chosen due to my interest in both fields. I've always known that I wanted to pursue studies based in the social sciences but it wasn't until I entered my collegiate studies that I discovered my love for both psychology and sociology. This prompted me to take on a dual major in my freshman year. However, after further researching my chosen career path, it seemed a bit more favorable to obtain a single undergraduate degree and instead turn more of my energy towards obtaining a graduate degree.

As I progressed through the course sequences in both areas, it became quite evident that the varying perspectives of both fields would be very useful to me in my future career. After obtaining my undergraduate degree, I intend on pursuing my Masters in Mental Health Therapy and becoming a licensed professional counselor. As any type of mental health specialist, it is important to bring with you an eclectic education that is rich with diverse perspectives. The large amount of psychology and sociology courses I have and will continue to take have provided me with a wide understanding of two different but equally important social science fields.

Scattered in amongst the main concentrations, I've also worked in some other beneficial courses. Such fields as gender and women's studies, humans services, and leadership studies have further contributed to the diversified viewpoint I have acquired throughout my studies. Another large collection of my credit hours will be devoted to courses in the health promotions field. These courses will provide me with skills useful in designing and implementing programs that will improve a person's quality of life. This is extremely important in the clinical social science fields since its entire purpose is to evaluate and eventually help better the lives of those it serves.
